APITemplate.io alternative: PDFOven vs APITemplate.io
APITemplate.io is a template-first platform for both PDFs and images, with a visual (WYSIWYG) PDF editor, a drag-and-drop image editor and strong no-code integrations. PDFOven is a developer-focused render API: you send HTML, Markdown, a URL or a Handlebars template and get the file back immediately, and templates are edited as code. If your team is non-technical or lives in Zapier and Airtable, APITemplate.io is a natural fit; if you want a lean API at a lower entry price, PDFOven may suit you better.

When to choose APITemplate.io
- Non-developers design the templates. APITemplate.io offers a visual WYSIWYG PDF editor and a drag-and-drop image editor; PDFOven's editor is code only.
- You automate with no-code tools. It integrates with Zapier, Make, n8n, Airtable and Bubble. PDFOven has no Zapier or Make integration yet.
- You want hosted file URLs. Paid plans include CDN storage and direct URLs, and Enterprise plans can upload straight to your own S3 bucket.
- You need data residency. It offers regional processing and storage in the US, EU, Singapore and Australia.
- You generate lots of social images. Its image tooling includes stock photos from Unsplash and Pexels, auto-positioning, smart crop and QR codes.
- Security reviews matter. APITemplate.io states it is SOC 2 Type II audited.
When to choose PDFOven
- You want a lower entry price. Starter is $12/month for 2,000 renders, and Scale is $99/month for 60,000.
- You prefer templates as code. Write Handlebars in the dashboard code editor with live preview, or skip saving and send a
templateplusdatainline. - You want one-off renders too. Send raw
html,markdownor aurlwithout creating a template. - You prefer files that are never stored. PDFOven returns the bytes (binary or base64) and keeps nothing.
- You use AI agents. The PDFOven MCP server at

Migrating from APITemplate.io
Recreate a template in the PDFOven dashboard (or start from the invoice, receipt, certificate or report starter), then render it with your JSON data:
curl -X POST https://pdfoven.com/v1/pdf \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PDFOVEN_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"template_id": "YOUR_TEMPLATE_ID",
"data": { "customer": "Acme Inc.", "total": "149.00" },
"options": { "format": "A4" },
"response": "base64"
}'
With "response": "base64" you get JSON back instead of raw bytes, which is convenient if you previously stored a URL and now want to save the file yourself.
