DocRaptor alternative: PDFOven vs DocRaptor

DocRaptor and PDFOven solve the same problem with different engines. DocRaptor is built on Prince, a print-focused engine with deep CSS Paged Media support, accessible PDF tagging and PDF forms. PDFOven renders with Chromium, the same engine as the Chrome browser, and adds Markdown input, Handlebars templates, image output and an MCP server. If your documents are long, print-grade or must meet accessibility standards, DocRaptor is hard to beat; if you want browser-identical rendering at a low monthly price, PDFOven is worth a look.

When to choose DocRaptor

DocRaptor has been around for over a decade and has real strengths that a Chromium-based API does not match:

  • Print-grade layout. Prince supports CSS Paged Media features such as named pages, mixed page sizes in one document, footnotes and sidenotes, page floats, cross-references, crop marks and printer's marks.
  • Accessible PDFs and PDF forms. DocRaptor can tag PDFs to meet WCAG 2.0, Section 508 and ISO-14289, and converts HTML forms into PDF forms.
  • Compliance. DocRaptor lists SOC2, HIPAA and GDPR compliance and a 99.99% uptime guarantee.
  • Unlimited free test documents. Every account includes unlimited watermarked test documents, and documents cost the same regardless of size.
  • Hosting and spreadsheets. It can host your PDFs at an unbranded URL and can also produce XLS/XLSX files.

When to choose PDFOven

  • You want the PDF to match what Chrome shows. PDFOven uses Chromium, so modern CSS and client-side JavaScript render as they do in the browser.
  • You need volume at a low price. PDFOven Starter is $12/month for 2,000 renders, and Scale is $99/month for 60,000.
  • You render templates or Markdown. Send markdown, an inline Handlebars template with data, or a saved template_id.
  • You also need images. POST /v1/image renders the same input to PNG or JPEG.
  • You use AI agents. The PDFOven MCP server at https://pdfoven.com/mcp exposes render_pdf, render_image and list_templates.

PDFOven pricing: Free (100 renders/month), Starter $12/month (2,000), Growth $39/month (15,000), Scale $99/month (60,000).

Migrating from DocRaptor

Because PDFOven uses Chromium rather than Prince, Prince-specific CSS (for example advanced Paged Media rules) will not carry over one to one; test your most complex pages first. Headers and footers move into header_template and footer_template:

curl -X POST https://pdfoven.com/v1/pdf \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $PDFOVEN_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "html": "<h1>Quarterly report</h1><p>...</p>",
    "options": {
      "format": "Letter",
      "margin": "0.75in",
      "footer_template": "<div style=\"font-size:9px;width:100%;text-align:center\">Page <span class=\"pageNumber\"></span> of <span class=\"totalPages\"></span></div>"
    }
  }' \
  -o report.pdf
