PDFMonkey alternative: PDFOven vs PDFMonkey

PDFMonkey and PDFOven are close cousins: both render with a Chrome-based browser, both let you manage templates in a dashboard and fill them with JSON. PDFMonkey uses Liquid templates, also offers a drag-and-drop Builder, keeps generated documents for a plan-dependent retention period and integrates with Zapier, Make and n8n. PDFOven uses Handlebars, never stores rendered files, can render raw HTML, Markdown and URLs without a template, and ships an MCP server for AI agents.

When to choose PDFMonkey

  • You want the lowest paid entry price. PDFMonkey Starter is €5/month for 300 documents, with yearly billing saving 10%.
  • You want both code and visual templates. Developers can write Liquid code templates while others use the drag-and-drop Builder.
  • You need stored documents and share links. PDFMonkey keeps documents for a retention period and offers permanent share links on Pro+ and Premium.
  • You automate with no-code tools. It integrates with Zapier, Make and n8n. PDFOven has no Zapier or Make integration yet.
  • You need flexible overages. Pay-as-you-go and Boost Packs (1,000 documents for €5) keep generation running past your quota.
  • You want fillable forms or EU hosting. Fillable PDF forms and password protection are on every plan, and its infrastructure runs on European servers.

When to choose PDFOven

  • You need more volume on a small budget. PDFOven Starter is $12/month for 2,000 renders and Growth is $39/month for 15,000.
  • You render without templates too. Send raw html, markdown or a url, or pass a Handlebars template plus data inline.
  • You prefer files that are never stored. PDFOven returns the bytes (binary or base64) and keeps nothing, so there is no retention window to manage.
  • You also need images. POST /v1/image renders the same input to PNG or JPEG.
  • You use AI agents. The PDFOven MCP server at https://pdfoven.com/mcp exposes render_pdf, render_image and list_templates.

PDFOven pricing: Free (100 renders/month), Starter $12/month (2,000), Growth $39/month (15,000), Scale $99/month (60,000).

Migrating from PDFMonkey

Liquid and Handlebars are similar enough that most templates port with small changes: {{ customer.name }} stays the same, and {% for item in items %} becomes {{#each items}}. Save the converted template in the dashboard and render it by ID:

curl -X POST https://pdfoven.com/v1/pdf \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $PDFOVEN_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "template_id": "YOUR_TEMPLATE_ID",
    "data": { "customer": { "name": "Acme Inc." }, "items": [{ "name": "Widget", "price": "9.00" }] },
    "options": { "format": "A4" }
  }' \
  -o invoice.pdf
